Double-Counting (or Counting One Course to Meet Multiple Requirements)

Many undergraduate courses at Saint Louis University fulfill requirements of multiple programs simultaneously; we often refer to this as a course “double-counting” to meet two (or sometimes more) requirements. 

When a SLU student chooses to take a course that “double-counts” – for example, a single course that simultaneously meets both (a) a requirement for their academic major and (b) a requirement for the University Undergraduate Core – that student reduces the total number of discrete credits taken to fulfill those two curriculum requirements. 

The same is true for courses that “double-count” to simultaneously meet requirements of:

• two (or more) majors
• both a major and a minor
• both a minor and the University core
• both a major (or minor) and a certificate program

Accordingly, the total credits listed for each curriculum component on the “Requirements” tabs for each academic program in this catalog could vary by student, depending on their course choices. Students work with their academic advisors to make course selection choices in the students’ best educational interests. 

In no case, however, can a student graduate with a bachelor’s degree without first having completed a minimum of 120 total credits (either exclusively at SLU or including accepted transfer credit); note that some degree programs require students to minimally complete more than 120 total credits.
