History, B.A. to M.A. Accelerated Program

Saint Louis University’s accelerated History B.A./M.A. program offers qualified history majors the opportunity to begin work toward the M.A. degree in History while completing requirements for the B.A., thereby reducing the time needed to earn the M.A. degree.

Students will be eligible to apply for the ABM after completing 75 undergraduate hours with an overall GPA of 3.70 in their history coursework. It is recommended that students apply to and enter the ABM in the semester that they become eligible by hours.

For additional information, see the catalog entries for the following SLU programs:

History, B.A.

History, M.A.

The accelerated history B.A./M.A. program allows students to use up to 15 graduate credits toward their undergraduate degree though most students will use 12 graduate credits.

The following graduate courses are taken as an undergraduate student: HIST 5000 and HIST 5X10 as well as two or three other courses at the 5000 level or above.  These courses will count toward the 30 hours in the M.A. as well as the undergraduate major.

In the accelerated program, student progress is monitored by the History Undergraduate Program Coordinator, the History Graduate Program Coordinator, and the student’s mentor.

•    For the B.A. degree, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 and a GPA of at least 2.00 in their coursework in History.
•    For the ABM program, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00  overall in order to remain in good standing.
•    For the ABM program, students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.00 in their coursework in History in order to remain in good standing.
•    For the ABM program, students may carry no more than one incomplete grade [I] into a new semester in order to remain in good standing.

Students who drop below these standards while in the ABM program will be put on one semester of probation during which they may remedy the problem. If the problem is not remedied, they will be dropped from the ABM program. If their probationary status includes their last semester in the ABM and is not remedied, they will not be admitted to the MA program.

Once a student is formally admitted to the M.A. program, the continuation standards of that program apply.

Roadmaps are recommended semester-by-semester plans of study for programs and assume full-time enrollment unless otherwise noted.

Courses and milestones designated as critical (marked with !) must be completed in the semester listed to ensure a timely graduation. Transfer credit may change the roadmap.

This roadmap should not be used in the place of regular academic advising appointments. All students are encouraged to meet with their advisor/mentor each semester. Requirements, course availability and sequencing are subject to change.
