Grade Point Average Deficit Points

Grade Point Average Deficit Points provide a numerical measure of how far a student is from achieving or exceeding the required GPA of 2.00.

    •    A positive value for deficit points indicates performance above the 2.00 minimum standard.

    •    A negative value reflects a deficit, meaning the student’s cumulative GPA is below 2.00.

Grade Point Average Deficit Points are defined as Total GPA Points - (2.00 × GPA Credits).  Where:

    •    Total GPA Points = Sum of (Grade Points × Credit Hours) for all courses.

    •    GPA Credits = Total number of credit hours attempted that count toward the GPA.

Example Calculations:

Example 1: No Deficit

    •    GPA Credits: 30

    •    Total GPA Points: 60 (equivalent to a 2.00 GPA)

    •    Deficit Points = 60 - (2.00 × 30) = 0

    •    The student meets the minimum GPA requirement and has no deficit.

Example 2: GPA Deficit

    •    GPA Credits: 30

    •    Total GPA Points: 50 (equivalent to a 1.67 GPA)

    •    Deficit Points = 50 - (2.00 × 30) = -10

    •    The student has a deficit of 10 GPA points and is below the required GPA.

Example 3: GPA Surplus

    •    GPA Credits: 30

    •    Total GPA Points: 70 (equivalent to a 2.33 GPA)

    •    Deficit Points = 70 - (2.00 × 30) = +10

    •    The student exceeds the minimum GPA and has a surplus of 10 points.
